Addressing Cardiovascular Comorbidities in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a significant source of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. In this Expert Practice Arthur Kavanaugh, MD, discusses the impact of cardiovascular risk factors on the management of patients with RA. Topics addressed include epidemiology of CVD and related risk factors in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, how rheumatoid arthritis treatment influences cardiovascular risk factors, and the overall management of rheumatoid arthritis patients with cardiovascular risk factors.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: New Targeted Treatments
This activity is designed for rheumatologists, rheumatology fellows, and health care providers who are interested in or treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Topics discussed include immunopathogenic processes in RA, the role of new B-cell–targeted and T-cell–targeted therapies in the treatment of RA, and how to choose outcomes measures and treatment options that optimize clinical benefits in adults with RA.

Hospital for Special Surgery and Weill Medical College of Cornell University gratefully acknowledge the generous support in the form of an unrestricted educational grant from Genentech, Inc. and Biogen Idec.

Use of Novel Biologics in the Treatment of Moderate to Severe Rheumatoid Arthritis
This activity is designed for rheumatologists and other health care providers who are interested in or treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The addition of the newer agents with novel mechanisms of action has expanded the armamentarium of biologic treatment options for the patient with RA. With this expansion of therapeutic choices, however, several key clinical issues need to be addressed to ensure rational and clinically sound application of abatacept and rituximab in clinical practice. In this interactive case series, experts identify, assess, and evaluate the available scientific research on and clinical experience with the use of rituximab and abatacept in patients with moderate to severe RA.

The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Center for Continuing Education acknowledges an educational grant for support of this activity from Genentech, Inc. and Biogen Idec.
