The addition of the newer agents with novel mechanisms of action has expanded the armamentarium of biologic treatment options for the patient with RA. With this expansion of therapeutic choices, however, several key clinical issues need to be addressed to ensure rational and clinically sound application of abatacept and rituximab in clinical practice. In this interactive case series, experts identify, assess, and evaluate the available scientific research on and clinical experience with the use of rituximab and abatacept in patients with moderate to severe RA. View Presentation An Evidence-Based Approach to Managing TNF Failures In the past year, 2 new biologic agents with novel mechanisms of action have been approved for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Now that these novel B-cell– and T-cell–directed therapies are available and approved for use after an inadequate response to at least one TNF inhibitor, clinicians now have additional treatment options. The greater availability of effective agents should motivate clinicians to regularly measure disease activity in a formal, objective manner in order to justify the use or alteration of specific medications and to improve patient outcomes.
