Dr. Silverman is Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and the Director of the NIAMS-NIH supported Rheumatic Diseases Core Center. He earned a medical degree at Rutgers Medical School in New Jersey, and served his residency in internal medicine at UCSD, followed by a rheumatology fellowship and research fellowship in clinical and experimental immunology at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, California.
Dr. Silverman is board certified in internal medicine and rheumatology. He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Henry Kunkel Society, and the American Association of Immunologists, and is a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology. He has served as the Chair of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Board and on the National Board of Directors of the Arthritis Foundation.
Dr. Silverman's research group has focused on understanding the molecular and cellular basis of B-lymphocyte responses in infectious, autoimmune, and chronic inflammatory diseases. His current research efforts are supported by NIAMS, NIAID, and the Alliance for Lupus Research in projects that seek to develop new therapeutic agents for the treatment of lupus and other autoimmune diseases.
Philip J. Mease, MD
Dr. Mease is a Clinical Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Chief of Rheumatology Clinical Research at the Swedish Hospital Medical Center, and conducts clinical practice with Seattle Rheumatology Associates. He earned his medical degree at Stanford University and served his residency in internal medicine at the University of Washington, where he subsequently was chief resident and fellow in rheumatology.
Dr. Mease conducts clinical trials of emerging therapies for a number of rheumatic disease conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis. He has authored numerous articles and book chapters and is on review boards for Arthritis & Rheumatism, the Journal of Rheumatology, and Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. Awards he has received include the Medical Communicator Award of the American College of Rheumatology, awarded annually to the physician who most effectively and dynamically presents rheumatology subjects to the public.
An advisor and educator on the study and therapy of rheumatic diseases, Dr. Mease is on the medical advisory boards of numerous pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies as well as the Lupus Foundation, the Psoriasis Foundation, and the Northwest Arthritis & Osteoporosis Institute. He is a founding organizer of GRAPPA (Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis), an international consortium of rheumatology and dermatology investigators and representatives of patient service leagues, the biopharmaceutical industry, and regulatory agencies. He is also chair or co-chair of three working groups of OMERACT (Outcome Measures in Rheumatology): psoriatic arthritis, fibromyalgia, and single joint assessment.

Dr. Calabrese is a Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University as well as at the Ohio State University School of Medicine. He holds the RJ Fasenmyer Chair of Clinical Immunology at the Cleveland Clinic, where he also serves as Head of the Clinical Immunology Section and Vice Chairman, Department of Rheumatic & Immunologic Diseases. He received his osteopathic degree from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and trained in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, followed by a fellowship in rheumatic and immunologic disease. He also competed a postdoctoral fellowship with the Athritis Foundation.
Dr. Calabrese is board certified in internal medicine and rheumatology. He is a member of numerous societies, including the Clinical Immunology Society and the American Osteopathic Association, and is a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology and the American College of Physicians. Among his many awards and honors, Dr. Calabrese has received the Phillips Medal of Public Service from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Bruce Hubbard Stewart Award for humanitarianism.
Dr. Calabrese serves on numerous editorial boards and is a deputy editor of Arthritis Care and Research. He has lectured nationally and internationally on the subjects of immunology and rheumatology and is the author of more than 300 published peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and reviews.
